Understanding Blackheads and 5 Easy Steps To Tackle Blackheads
So what are blackheads and how are they formed? What actually causes them are excess oil that are trapped in your skin's sebaceous glands.
Blackheads can also be caused by the build-up of dirt and oil on the surface of the skin from the use of excess cosmetics and moisturisers, or if the skin has not been cleaned properly. So, it's safe to say that blackheads mostly sprout on the faces of people that have oily skin. You hardly see it on dry-skinned people.
To remove a blackhead, first wash your face. If you try to remove blackheads without first washing your face, you risk infection or more breakouts. Gently extract the blackhead. If you force the blackhead you risk aggravating or inflaming the skin and this might lead to scarring.
Another way of extracting blackheads is by using 'Biore pore strips'. They are deep pore cleansing strips that can get rid of the dirt that causes blackheads. remember at the beginning of the post, i mentioned that when the sebum (oil) mixes with the dead skin cells and blocks your pores, it causes blackheads. The dead skin cells are removed through exfoliation. Use the St, Ives Apricot scrub for blackheads. Don’t wash your face with harsh cleansers. Cleansing your face is important because it helps prevent more blackheads from showing up by unclogging your skin pores of dirt and oil.
Wash your pillowcase on a weekly basis (to clean off any dead skin cells and oils your face leaves behind on it).
Blot your face with blotting tissue paper throughout the day to soak up oil before it can accumulate and nix with dead skin and block your pores again, forming more blackheads.
Here are our 5 easy ways to tackle blackheads:
1. Cleansing.
A light cleansing gel is preferable to rich, creamy cleansers to help balance oil production in the skin. Daily cleansing is recommended. A cleanser will remove dirt and oil from the surface of the skin.
2 Exfoliating.
Exfoliating works at a deeper level compared to a cleanser. Scrubs contain particles that can remove impurities in the pores and dead skin cells making the skin appear brighter and smoother. Before shaving, exfoliating can reduce inflammation in the skin by smoothing out any bumps in the hair follicles.
3. Steaming and extraction.
A qualified beauty therapist best performs steaming and extraction and it can be a very effective method to treat blackheads. The steam will open the pores so it will be easier to extract blackheads with a metal remover tool, which is gently pushed against the skin to remove the blackheads. The skin is then immediately disinfected to prevent the spreading of bacteria.
4. Blackhead removing strips.
After steaming at home, you can apply blackhead removal strips to the affected areas; these strips can be easily purchased from a variety of health and beauty stores.
5. Homemade Facemasks.
Here’s our easy-peasy face mask recipe below.
Ingredients:
2 Tsp of Runny Natural Honey
Juice of ½ Lemon (Organic is best)
Instructions:
Mix them together until it is a smooth mixture and apply to the face for around 20 minutes before washing off. Needless to say, avoid putting it on your eye area and if there is any left over, add to a mug with hot water and enjoy!
